I’m struggling at work. I’m so burned out and have been for a long time. Or, as our recent employee survey would call it, I’m “fully disengaged”. I can’t focus even on things that used to interest me. I’ve been at this place for far too long and I need a change, but I feel like I don’t even have the energy to start a job search. I think I started trying to update my resume back in January, and then never finished.

Has anyone else been through this? How do you muster the energy to change jobs when all you want to do is avoid working because you’re so sick of work?

Bearddamnheroes thinks I should just quit and take a break from working for a while, spend some time at home with him (he works from home) and lildamnhero. Find my motivation again. Maybe volunteer for some of the groups fighting for immigrant rights right now, or registering people to vote. That’s sounding like a pretty great plan to me, but also feels crazy irresponsible. Can I really quit a job without having something else lined up? Bearddamnheroes’ salary just went up and he can definitely support us for a while. Am I hurting my future career prospects by considering being unemployed for a while? And what if I have trouble finding something new?

I’ve almost cried at work every day for about the past week. I’m just so done with it. I’m miserable being at work, thinking about work, getting up in the morning getting ready for work... Bearddamnheroes also proposed that I sit down with my manager and tell him I feel this way, but I don’t feel like that will accomplish anything. I don’t think there’s anything he can do at this point for me to come back from this.

It just feels like there’s no escaping this monotonous miserable routine. I drag myself out of bed in the morning, suffer at work for eight hours, procrastinating and watching the clock, then race home to spend time with my baby. Then I struggle to fall asleep (ensuring that I don’t get enough and will be exhausted the next day), thinking about how I’ll have to go to work in the morning. Rinse and repeat.
